Awards & fellowshipsANHS sponsors several fellowships to recognize exceptional scholarship on the region. We seek to support scholars in the region as well as those outside the Himalayas writing and researching about the area. In addition to the fellowships and prizes offered by the ANHS, we also seek to publicize grants and awards that might be of interest to our membership. Applicants must be active members of the ANHS or scholars affiliated with an ANHS institutional member. Award activities must take place in the Himalaya. The funding of these awards is contingent on (1) the availability of funds, and (2) the budgetary limitations and restrictions of the ANHS and its external funding sources. The James Fisher Prize for First Books on the Himalayan RegionThe James Fisher Prize for First Books on the Himalayan Region honors the scholarly contributions of Dr. James Fisher to scholarship on the region. The prize will recognize an outstanding first book on the Himalayan region, published within the past two years (2017-2019). Single or co-authored books will be accepted which have high quality of research, significant contribution to Himalayan Studies, notable innovation, and clarity of writing in the English language Himalayan Studies FellowshipThe ANHS offers two $1500 fellowships, one for pre-PhD students and one for scholars who have earned their PhD. Applicants for the pre-PhD fellowship must provide documentation that they are an enrolled graduate or professional student in good standing with their institution. Applicants for the post-PhD fellowship must hold a PhD or equivalent terminal professional degree by the time of submission The Dor Bahadur Bista Prize for the Best Graduate Student PaperThe Dor Bahadur Bista Prize honors the life, career, and service of Dor Bahadur Bista, Nepal’s first anthropologist and former Honorary President of the ANHS predecessor organization, the Nepal Studies Association (NSA). The purpose of the prize is to recognize outstanding scholarship by students whose research focuses on the areas of Himalayas. Submissions from all academic disciplines in the social sciences, humanities, and arts will be accepted. Asian Student Membership Scholarship AwardsAsian Student Membership Scholarships are available to students studying in the Himalayan region and offers complementary membership to ANHS for one year. Applicants must be current students of a school/university in the Himalayan region. Decisions are made on a rolling basis. These have been archived for reference purpose only ANHS Travel GrantsPostponed until further notice The Travel Grant promotes scholarly activities that are consistent with the ANHS vision and mission. ANHS provides at its discretion two kinds of cost-sharing travel grants: grants for overseas scholars to attend ANHS events such as the Himalayan Studies Conference and the Madison South Asia Conference, and grants for members of the Executive Council to attend the Executive Council meeting, if emergency funds are needed. |

The Senior Fellowship supports short-term research or other scholarly projects that will advance knowledge of the Himalaya-Karakoram-Hindukush mountain regions. Applicants must hold a terminal degree in their field (PhD, MFA, MD).
