ABOUT US
The Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies (ANHS) was founded in 1971 as the Nepal Studies Association with support from the Ford Foundation. In 1999, to reflect a widening member base and area of interest, the association broadened its mandate to cover the entire Himalayan region and adjacent mountain areas (High Asia), and adopted its current name. This Association is organized exclusively for the educational and charitable purposes within the meaning of the Section 501 (C) 3 of the Internal Revenue Code and is governed by its Constitution and By-laws.
The ANHS is the oldest academic organization devoted to the study of the Himalaya in the United States. Members include scholars from various academic disciplines, students, resource and development professionals, and a variety of other Himalayan-region residents and enthusiasts. ANHS members are anthropologists, geographers, religious studies specialists, philosophers, geologists, political scientists, educators, artists, travellers. They work or live in or are experts on Bhutan, Nepal, the Indian Himalaya, Pakistan, Tibet. A few know the territories farther west and north (Afghanistan/the Hindukush; Tajikistan/the Pamir). Most members belong to other networks and have close connections to additional scholars who widen the geographical networks accessible to ANHS. |

Our journal, HIMALAYA, publishes original research and works as a clearinghouse of information about regional publications, conferences, grant and study opportunities, and research in progress. ANHS also organizes conferences and symposia, and sponsors
photography exhibits and other outreach efforts, including calendars.
