ACTIVITIES

ANHS is a membership organization governed by its Constitution. The main activities of ANHS include:

  • Publication of the HIMALAYA Journal
  • Sponsorship and organization of panelsand special sessions at the Annual Conference on South Asia
  • Senior Fellowship Program
  • Occassional Seminar Series
  • Do Bahadur Bista Prize (Best Student Paper)
  • Publication of calendars
  • Maintain regular communication among members through the Himal-Research electronic mailing list.

Annual conference

The annual meeting of ANHS is usually organized during the Annual Conference on South Asia, Madison, Wisconsin.

Senior Fellowship Program

ANHS recently announced the applications for support of short term research or other scholarly projects that will advance knowledge of the Himalaya-Karakoram-Hindukush mountain regions. Applicants should be at the postdoctoral level or have equivalent professional experience. The fellowship will support work focusing on any aspect of Himalayan studies.

Occassional Seminar Series in Kathmandu, Nepal

As part of its ongoing collaboration, ANHS and the Social Science Baha (SSB) in Kathmandu, Nepal, organizes short workshops/seminars for Nepali students, researchers, scholars and the public in general. The topics of workshops/seminars generally depend on the academic and research insterests of visiting scholars who leads the workshops/seminars.

Dor Bahadur Bista Prize (for best graduate student paper)

ANHS annually awards the Dor Bahadur Bista Prize for best graduate student paper submitted to this ANHS competition. The prize honors the life, career, and service of Dor Bahadur Bista, Nepal’s first anthropologist and former Honorary President of the ANHS predecessor organization, the Nepal Studies Association (NSA).

Dor Bahadur Bista's Photograph The purpose of the Prize is to recognize outstanding scholarship by students whose research focuses on the areas of High Asia (Hindu Kush –
Karakoram – Himalaya – Tibetan Plateau) that comprise the principal interests of ANHS. Submissions from all academic disciplines in the social sciences, humanities, and arts will be accepted.

2008 Calendar Produced by ANHS

Calendar

ANHS, in collaboration with Portland State University students, produce an annual the High Asia Calendar highlighting the peoples and places of the greater Himalayan region. The goal of the calendars is to deepen understanding of the landscapes, lives, and issues of High Asia, and to foster appreciation and tolerance for far-away peoples and places.
